Wind energy is a very hot topic these days - wind turbines seem to be growing like mushrooms, and wind farms are popping up everywhere.

Wind powered devices have been around for a long time - Dutch-style wind mills come to mind.

These days, the most popular method of power production uses a wind turbine to convert air currents (wind) into rotating energy, which in turn powers an electric generator.

This is a controversial method of generating power, as it is hard to scale up to a significant proportion of total energy use, it creates noise, some people think they look ugly, and they may be hazardous to birds.

On the other hand, they are capable of producing energy right next to where it is consumed, they produce no emissions when operating, and are low maintenance.
